Kyiv, July 15: The European Union and Ukraine have agreed to deepen cooperation on military drone technology through a new partnership aimed at expanding joint production and strengthening defence capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia.

The announcement was made in Kyiv by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to the Ukrainian capital.

She said the partnership would combine Ukraine’s extensive battlefield experience in drone warfare with Europe’s advanced industrial and manufacturing capacity.

According to EU officials, the collaboration is expected to accelerate the development and production of drones and counter-drone systems.

Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in drone innovation after years of adapting its technology to meet the demands of modern warfare, while European manufacturers possess the infrastructure needed for large-scale production.

Von der Leyen said Europe has strong industrial capabilities but can benefit from Ukraine’s practical expertise gained during the conflict.

She noted that closer cooperation would help improve defence readiness and support technological innovation across both regions.

President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward strengthening Ukraine’s defence industry and expanding cooperation with European partners.

He said Ukraine has significantly increased domestic drone production and aims to further expand manufacturing with international support.

The agreement comes as the European Union continues to provide financial and military assistance to Ukraine.

A portion of the EU’s broader support package is expected to contribute to increasing Ukraine’s defence manufacturing capacity, including the production of drones and related technologies.

Military analysts say drones have become a defining feature of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, playing a critical role in surveillance, precision strikes, logistics, and air defence.

The growing reliance on unmanned systems has encouraged European nations to invest more heavily in drone technology and strengthen cooperation with Ukraine.

The new partnership is expected to enhance technological collaboration, improve production capacity, and contribute to Europe’s long-term defence preparedness while supporting Ukraine’s efforts to modernise its military capabilities.
