Ranchi, July 11: A traders’ association has opposed the Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) proposal to develop new market complexes at New Market on Ratu Road, New Daily Market Main Road and Khadgarha Bus Stand, alleging that the move threatens the livelihoods of long-established shopkeepers.
The RRD Shopkeepers’ Welfare Association, at an emergency meeting held on Saturday, announced that it would launch an agitation against the proposal if the civic body proceeds with the redevelopment plan.
The association also warned of demonstrations before government offices if its concerns remain unaddressed.
Association members claimed that the proposed redevelopment could affect traders who have been operating their businesses under the RRD scheme for more than four decades.
They said the shops are the primary source of income for hundreds of families and also provide employment to numerous workers.
The traders alleged that the decision had been taken without adequate consultation with those likely to be affected.
They urged the municipal corporation to hold discussions with stakeholders before implementing any redevelopment project.
Office-bearers of the association, including General Secretary Mohammad Shameem, Vice-President Prem Singh, Haji Mohammad Hasim, Mohammad Chand and Ajay Khakha, attended the meeting and unanimously criticised the proposal.
They said the sudden displacement of shopkeepers could disrupt livelihoods, children’s education and medical care for elderly family members.
The association appealed to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation to reconsider the proposal and adopt a rehabilitation-oriented approach that safeguards the interests of existing traders while pursuing urban development.
