Ukrainian drones strike deep inside Russia, 11 injured at suspected missile plant

Russia, 21 Feb: Ukrainian drones struck an industrial facility in Russia’s Udmurt Republic overnight, injuring 11 people in one of the deepest reported cross-border attacks since the start of the war, regional officials said Saturday.

Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, confirmed that a facility within the region had been targeted.

“One of the republic’s facilities was attacked by drones,” Brechalov said in a statement, adding that the strike caused injuries and structural damage. He did not publicly identify the site.

Regional Health Minister Sergei Bagin said 11 people were hurt in the incident, with three requiring hospitalization.

Unofficial Russian Telegram channels, including Astra, reported that the attack struck the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant, a major state-owned defense enterprise. The outlet said its assessment was based on geolocated footage shared by local residents.

The plant, situated more than 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from Ukrainian territory, is known for manufacturing Iskander ballistic missile systems as well as nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), making it a critical component of Russia’s strategic weapons infrastructure.

Another Telegram channel, SHOT, citing sources familiar with security services, reported that residents in the town of Votkinsk heard at least three explosions during the night and described the sound of drones overhead. Images circulating online showed dark smoke rising above an industrial complex and damage to nearby buildings, including shattered windows.

There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian authorities regarding the strike.

If confirmed, the attack would underscore Kyiv’s growing ability to project drone operations far beyond frontline regions and into Russia’s military-industrial heartland. The incident also highlights increasing pressure on strategic defense facilities previously considered out of reach.
