Guwahati, Jan 6: A Congress organisational meeting in Assam’s Sribhumi district turned violent on Monday after a senior party leader was allegedly attacked by another Congress worker at a restaurant in Nilambazar, triggering shock and unrest within party ranks.
Jillur Choudhury, a member of the District Council, sustained serious injuries in the incident. He was initially taken to Sribhumi Civil Hospital and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
He is currently undergoing advanced treatment, hospital sources said. According to sources, the incident occurred after a Congress organisational meeting held earlier in the day at Nilambazar.
The meeting was attended by All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Vikas Upadhyay, Sribhumi observer Nasir Khan and several district-level office-bearers.
After the meeting, party leaders reportedly went to a nearby restaurant for tea, where an altercation broke out. During the confrontation, Shahanaz Hussain, identified as a probable Congress candidate from North Karimganj, allegedly attacked Choudhury with a sharp weapon.
The sudden outbreak of violence caused panic at the spot and led to immediate medical intervention. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances leading to the incident.
The episode has sent shockwaves through Congress circles in the district, raising concerns over growing internal discord within the party. Notably, this is the second instance of a violent altercation reported in the presence of Nasir Khan, who is currently serving as the Congress observer in charge of Sribhumi.
