Assam, Dec 22: Tension prevailed at the Ghiladhari Police Station in Assam’s Golaghat district after local residents staged a protest inside the police station premises, alleging police brutality during a late-night wedding ceremony in a nearby village, police sources said on Tuesday.
According to residents, the incident took place at a wedding function in Rupkaliya village, located close to the police station, where three police personnel allegedly resorted to indiscriminate baton charging while responding to a minor altercation.
Locals claimed that force was used without proper inquiry, leaving several people injured. At least seven persons were reportedly in serious condition, the residents said.
The injured were identified as Ajay Karmakar, Puja Karmakar, Lakhirram Karmakar, Bikash Karmakar, Bijoy Karmakar, Sanjay Karmakar and Biswajit Karmakar.
Eyewitnesses further alleged that the police team entered multiple houses in the village following the incident and assaulted residents, including women and children.
It was also claimed that the Village Defence Force (VDF) leader was severely beaten during the operation. Victims and residents accused the three police personnel of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, an allegation that intensified public anger.
Following the incident, affected families and villagers gathered at the Ghiladhari Police Station, creating a tense situation as they demanded strict disciplinary action against the accused police personnel and immediate medical treatment for those injured.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations. The situation in the area remains tense, with locals pressing for a fair and transparent inquiry into the matter.
