Trump moves to delay China visit as Iran war dominates US agenda

Washington, March 17: US President Donald Trump has signalled plans to postpone his upcoming trip to China by about a month, citing the need to remain in Washington amid the escalating Iran conflict.

The visit, which was expected to include high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping between March 31 and April 2, is now likely to be rescheduled as the White House focuses on coordinating its military and strategic response to the ongoing war.

Speaking to reporters, Trump indicated the delay was driven purely by operational priorities linked to the conflict, stressing the importance of his presence in the US during a critical phase. He also reiterated his positive personal rapport with Xi, suggesting that the postponement should not be interpreted as a diplomatic setback.

The Iran war has rapidly overtaken other pillars of Washington’s foreign policy, disrupting planned engagements and adding fresh complexity to already strained US–China relations. Tensions between the two powers have been building over trade disputes, Taiwan, and Beijing’s continued economic ties with Tehran.

The conflict has also rattled global energy markets, particularly through disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz — a vital artery for international oil shipments. China, one of the largest importers of Iranian crude, has criticised US and Israeli military actions, further widening the geopolitical divide.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent underlined that the proposed delay is unrelated to trade disagreements, noting that the president’s immediate priority is overseeing the war effort. “Travelling abroad at a time like this may not be optimal,” he said during engagements in Paris.

Despite rising tensions, diplomatic channels remain active. Officials from both countries recently held discussions in Paris covering tariffs, investment flows and access to critical minerals. Chinese representatives expressed concern over new US trade investigations but signalled willingness to continue dialogue.

Trump has also linked the timing of his China visit to broader international cooperation over securing maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have raised concerns about global supply chains.

The White House maintained that the president remains committed to visiting China, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that revised dates will be announced in due course.

The potential delay underscores how the Iran war is reshaping global diplomacy, forcing major powers to recalibrate priorities amid rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
