Touring Australia, gary stevenson urges tax reform to tackle soaring Inequality

Sydney, Feb 19: British economist and social media personality Gary Stevenson has warned that Australia risks heading toward “a very dark place” if rising inequality and housing unaffordability are not urgently addressed.

Stevenson, who is touring Australia this month, built significant wealth as a professional trader during the 2008 global financial crisis and has since become a prominent online voice on economic inequality, attracting millions of followers — particularly millennials concerned about declining purchasing power.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) ahead of his nationwide speaking tour, the 40-year-old economist said Australia’s long-held promise of offering citizens “a fair go” is under threat.

“This is a country that tells people it believes in having a fair go,” Stevenson said. “And it is a country which has, for a long time, provided affordable housing and good living conditions to ordinary working Australians.”

He argued that widening wealth gaps and soaring housing costs are eroding those foundations, leaving younger generations increasingly locked out of home ownership and struggling to maintain living standards.

Stevenson’s central message focuses on tax reform, contending that modern economies must rebalance the system by taxing the wealthy more heavily while easing the burden on lower-income earners.

He also called for higher wages and improved housing affordability to restore economic confidence and morale among working Australians.

“I want to come and show Australians what is happening in the UK, what is happening in Europe,” he said, pointing to the consequences of prolonged inequality.

“Public services being shut down, poverty exploding.” Stevenson cautioned that without structural reforms, Australia could follow a similar trajectory, undermining social cohesion and the quality of life that has historically defined the country’s economic model.
