Naypyidaw, Mar 24: Authorities in Myanmar have arrested 85 people during a major crackdown on illegal online gambling operations in Muse, a town near the country’s border with China, officials said.
The operation, carried out by security agencies in recent days, targeted suspected hubs of online gambling and scam-related activities. Officials said several electronic devices and other materials linked to the operations were seized during the raid.
The action is part of a broader effort by Myanmar authorities to curb the spread of online gambling and cyber fraud networks, which have increasingly drawn attention due to their cross-border links and organised nature.
Security agencies have stepped up enforcement in recent months, combining domestic crackdowns with cooperation from regional and international partners to dismantle such networks and prevent them from re-establishing operations.
Officials described the fight against illegal online gambling and scams as a national priority, emphasising the importance of coordination between local law enforcement and external agencies.
The Muse crackdown follows a series of similar actions aimed at disrupting organised groups involved in digital fraud and betting activities, particularly in border regions that are seen as vulnerable to such operations.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify wider links, including possible international connections, and to determine the full scope of the network.
