San Francisco, August 24: Meta Platforms has signed a deal with generative AI startup Midjourney to license its “aesthetic technology” for future artificial intelligence models and products, the social media company’s chief AI officer said on Friday.

The collaboration will connect the research teams of both companies, Alexandr Wang said in a post on X, highlighting Meta’s effort to sharpen the visual quality of its products as it seeks to reinvigorate its AI strategy amid intensifying competition with OpenAI and Google.

Midjourney, best known for generating images from text prompts through a subscription service, has gained prominence for its ability to produce highly stylized visuals. Meta believes integrating the startup’s technology could accelerate the rollout of creative tools for users and advertisers, lowering content production costs while boosting engagement.

“We are incredibly impressed by Midjourney,” Wang said, adding that Meta was combining top talent, a strong compute roadmap and partnerships with leading industry players to deliver stronger products.

The deal comes as Meta consolidates its AI work under a new division called Superintelligence Labs, following the departure of senior researchers and mixed reviews for its latest open-source Llama 4 model.
