Global energy transition faces inefficiencies, inequality challenges: study

New Delhi, Mar 30: A recent study has highlighted that the ongoing global shift towards sustainable energy systems is constrained by economic inefficiencies, policy gaps, and rising social inequalities, posing challenges to achieving climate and development goals.

Published in the journal Energies, the research underscores that balancing climate neutrality, energy security, and economic stability requires complex trade-offs across economic, social, environmental, and technological domains.

The study, which synthesises findings from multiple scientific papers, notes that despite increased public spending on climate initiatives, many countries continue to struggle with inefficient utilisation of resources.

In several regions, particularly within the European Union, higher investments have not translated into proportional improvements in emissions reduction or sustainability outcomes.

Researchers pointed to volatility in global energy markets, especially fluctuations in natural gas prices, as a key factor affecting household energy costs and exposing vulnerabilities in supply systems.

These trends, they said, highlight the interconnected nature of global energy economics.

The findings also reveal that income disparities significantly influence the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Higher-income households are more likely to invest in clean energy solutions, while lower-income groups face barriers despite public support programmes, raising concerns over widening socio-economic gaps.

The report further noted that regions dependent on coal-based energy systems face greater challenges in transitioning to cleaner alternatives, as economic restructuring in such areas is closely tied to political and governance factors.

On the social front, the study cautioned that energy transition policies, while environmentally necessary, could adversely affect living standards if not designed carefully.

In some cases, reduced energy consumption aimed at meeting climate targets may impact human development indicators, particularly in less affluent regions.

Energy poverty has also emerged as a growing concern, with rising costs potentially limiting access to essential energy services for vulnerable populations.

Without targeted interventions, the transition to cleaner energy could deepen existing inequalities, the study warned.

The research also highlights the role of behavioural and cultural factors in shaping energy consumption patterns, noting that policy changes can influence both consumer choices and market dynamics.

On the environmental and technological side, the study pointed out that not all renewable solutions yield uniformly positive outcomes.

For instance, shifts from coal to biomass in some regions may lead to unintended consequences such as increased emissions or environmental degradation.

It also emphasised the importance of infrastructure development, technological innovation, and circular economy practices, including recycling of energy storage components, to improve efficiency and sustainability.

The authors concluded that achieving global sustainability goals will require a coordinated, multidimensional approach that integrates economic planning, social equity, technological innovation, and region-specific strategies.

They stressed that effective policy design, equitable access to resources, and strong collaboration between governments, industry, and communities will be critical to ensuring a just and successful energy transition.
