Baku, Feb 19: An international conference titled “Neocolonialism and Global Inequality” opened in Baku, bringing together scholars, activists and field specialists to examine the lasting impacts of colonial systems.

The event has drawn leaders of independence movements and researchers specialising in neocolonialism, along with anthropologists and psychotherapists working directly with indigenous communities affected by colonial rule, marking their first-time participation in such a forum, organisers said.

Discussions at the conference are centred on the “traumatic and social experiences of peoples subjected to colonization” across different cultural and societal contexts.

Participants are also analysing structural challenges stemming from what speakers described as “illegal actions by colonial powers”, and their continuing consequences in former colonies.

A key focus of the deliberations is “improving access to information” to better document and present these experiences at the international level.

Delegates are exploring ways to “integrate digital and scientific platforms with virtual systems used by international organizations” to strengthen documentation, research collaboration and global advocacy efforts.

The conference will further deliberate on expanding access to expert and legal materials to support “international research groups studying colonialism and its modern consequences”.
