Australia’s South Battles Severe Heatwave, Fire Risks Rise

Sydney, Jan 7: A powerful heatwave swept across southern Australia on January 7, pushing temperatures beyond 40°C in several areas and prompting widespread health and emergency warnings, as authorities struggled to contain growing bushfire threats.

Weather officials described the conditions as the most severe in six years, drawing comparisons with the extreme climate patterns seen during the deadly 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires. The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe to extreme heat alerts for New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, while declaring extreme fire danger across parts of Victoria and South Australia.

Temperatures surged to 44°C in parts of Victoria, with Melbourne recording 41°C and Adelaide reaching 43°C. Fire crews were deployed to multiple blazes across Victoria, as emergency managers warned that the combination of extreme heat, dry vegetation and hot winds could worsen fire conditions in the coming days.

Authorities urged residents to remain indoors where possible, stay hydrated and monitor official warnings. The heat placed pressure on infrastructure, leaving more than 2,000 homes without electricity in Adelaide, while public facilities such as libraries extended operating hours to offer relief from the heat. Other attractions, including wildlife parks, were temporarily closed to protect staff and visitors.

Emergency services cautioned that the peak of the heatwave had not yet passed and warned that conditions could intensify by January 9, reinforcing calls for vigilance as southern Australia confronts another period of dangerous summer weather.
