April 17 – At least six people were hospitalized, one in critical condition, after a shooting at Florida State University on Thursday, according to hospital officials and U.S. media reports. A suspect has been taken into custody.

The shooting occurred around midday at the Student Union building on the university’s main campus in Tallahassee, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place advisory for students and faculty. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said it had received six patients from the incident, including one in critical condition and five in serious condition.

Law enforcement officers apprehended a suspect shortly after the shooting, CNN reported, citing two sources with knowledge of the investigation. Officials have not publicly identified the suspect, and law enforcement agencies have yet to confirm the details. More than 42,000 students attend classes at the FSU campus, one of the largest public universities in the state.

Thursday’s incident adds to a string of gun violence cases at educational institutions across the United States in recent years. In 2014, a Florida State University alumnus opened fire at the campus library, injuring three people before being shot and killed by police.
