San Francisco, May 17 — OpenAI announced on Thursday that its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini artificial intelligence models are now available to users of ChatGPT, marking a significant expansion of access following their initial release via the OpenAI API last month.

The move comes as part of a broader update to the AI firm’s offerings, which also includes the removal of the GPT-4o mini model from the platform. The company said the latest version, GPT-4.1, offers improvements in speed and performance, particularly in tasks related to coding and web development.

“GPT-4.1 builds on the safety work and mitigations developed for GPT-4o,” said Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s head of Safety Systems, in a post on X. “Across our standard safety evaluations, GPT-4.1 performs at parity with GPT-4o, showing that improvements can be delivered without introducing new safety risks.”

Despite its enhancements, GPT-4.1 does not exceed the intelligence of GPT-4o, known internally as “o3”, Heidecke noted, citing the absence of new interaction capabilities as a limiting factor.

OpenAI had previously removed GPT-4 from ChatGPT on April 30 as part of its ongoing restructuring of model access across its platforms. The company did not specify when GPT-4o mini would be phased out or provide details on future model releases.
