New Delhi, April 09: Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name into the Indian Premier League (IPL) record books by becoming the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history, surpassing swing specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Ashwin, 38, achieved the feat during Tuesday’s IPL 2025 clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), where he picked up two wickets for 48 runs in his four-over spell. With this performance, the Chennai-born cricketer now has 185 wickets in 217 matches, with best figures of 4/34, an average of 29.92, and an economy rate of 7.18.
The off-spinner now trails only Yuzvendra Chahal and Piyush Chawla in the all-time wicket-takers list. Chahal, playing for PBKS, leads with 206 wickets in 164 matches at an average of 22.83, followed by Chawla with 192 wickets in 192 matches at 26.60.
In the same match, rising opener Priyansh Arya stole the spotlight with his maiden IPL century, powering PBKS to a competitive total of 219 runs. The team went on to defeat five-time champions CSK by 18 runs, handing them their fourth loss of the season.
Arya was adjudged Player of the Match for his commanding innings, which anchored PBKS to a crucial win and lifted them to fourth place in the standings with three wins and one loss. Meanwhile, CSK continues to struggle, now sitting in ninth position with just one win from five matches.
