Colombo, Jan 7: The historic Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera will take place from January 8 to 10, 2026, marking one of Sri Lanka’s most significant annual Buddhist cultural observances, temple officials said.
Held at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, the procession holds deep religious importance as it marks the site traditionally associated with The Buddha’s third visit to Sri Lanka. Observed during Duruthu Poya in January, the event continues a tradition that began in 1927 and has since grown into a major low-country pageant blending religious devotion with cultural heritage.
The Perahera will be conducted under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent of Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhita Nayaka Thero, with organizational support from the Dayaka Sabha, led by Dr. Saman Weerasinghe.
Ceremonial proceedings will commence with the formal presentation of the Sacred Relic Casket to Chief Basnayake Nilame Dhammika Attygalle, followed by the Dathu Perahera of The Buddha. Devale Peraheras dedicated to God Vibeeshana, God Kataragama, and God Vishnu will also form part of the processions.
According to the programme, the Udamaluwe Perahera will be held on January 8, the Sacred City Perahera on January 9, and the Grand Duruthu Maha Perahera on January 10. Each procession is scheduled to begin at 8.00 p.m.
Temple authorities noted that special arrangements, including a designated viewing enclosure for foreign visitors, will be in place to facilitate tourist access while preserving the sanctity of the event.
