Mumbai, Jan 24 : Comedian Kapil Sharma has received a death threat via email from Pakistan, police confirmed. The email, signed off as “BISHNU,” warned Sharma that his activities were being monitored and demanded a reply within eight hours. Failure to comply, it said, would result in personal and professional consequences.
Sharma is among several Indian celebrities, including actors Rajpal Yadav, Sugandha Mishra, and choreographer Remo D’Souza, who have reported receiving similar threatening emails in recent weeks.
Rajpal Yadav received the email on December 14, 2024, but discovered it in his spam folder. He filed a police complaint on December 17. “I have filed a complaint with Amboli Police and cybercrime department. After that, I haven’t discussed it with anyone. I am an artiste and I want to entertain the audience with my performances. The agencies can update on these matters,” Yadav told NDTV in an audio message.
Sugandha Mishra and Remo D’Souza also lodged complaints after receiving similar threats.
Investigation Underway
The Mumbai Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under section 351(3) of BNS and are treating the investigation with urgency. The threats are suspected to be linked to jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, which has reportedly claimed responsibility.
Saif Ali Khan Stabbed
The threats come amid rising concerns for celebrity safety in Mumbai. Last week, actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked and stabbed six times at his Bandra home. Doctors removed a 2.5-inch knife from his wounds, and Khan was treated at Lilavati Hospital. He returned home on January 21 and was seen greeting fans and paparazzi. Khan also met Bhajan Singh Rana, an auto driver who rushed him to the hospital.
Salman Khan Tightens Security
Actor Salman Khan has stepped up his security, including installing bulletproof windows in his balcony, after previous threats allegedly linked to Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang.
Previous Incidents
The threats follow other violent episodes, including the killing of politician Baba Siddique near his Bandra residence in October 2024.
Mumbai Police and the cybercrime department are actively investigating the wave of threats. “We are taking the matter seriously as high-profile figures are being targeted,” a senior police official said.
