‘We won’t let Bengal become Bangladesh’: BJP minority wing launches sharp attack on Mamata

New Delhi, Dec 22: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the state had become unsafe under her leadership and was “moving towards fundamentalism,” drawing comparisons with recent unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh.

BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui accused Banerjee of promoting fundamentalist forces for vote-bank politics, claiming that such an approach had pushed West Bengal onto a dangerous path.

“Under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, West Bengal is going down the same path as Bangladesh. If this continues, the state will not remain safe,” Siddiqui alleged, asserting that the BJP would “liberate” West Bengal from what he described as divisive politics.

Referring to recent violence in Bangladesh following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, Siddiqui expressed solidarity with minority Hindu communities in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The unrest, which included incidents of arson and attacks on media establishments, also saw the lynching of a Hindu man, raising concerns over the safety of minorities in the neighbouring country.

Siddiqui appealed to secular and Islamic communities in Bangladesh to stand with minority Hindus and ensure their security and access to justice. He further stated that Muslims in India enjoyed equality and security, adding that similar protections should be ensured for minorities across the border.

Criticising Banerjee further, Siddiqui alleged that her ideology was “fundamentalist in nature” and accused her of encouraging it for political gains. “We will not allow West Bengal to become Bangladesh. In the 2026 elections, the people of Bengal will free the state from Mamata Banerjee,” he said.

The Trinamool Congress has not responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
