New Delhi /Washington, April 22 – U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for India following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of at least 26 people, many of them tourists. The assault has drawn widespread condemnation and sparked international solidarity with New Delhi.
“Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against terrorism,” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Sunday. “We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!”
The attack, which took place in the scenic town of Pahalgam—located approximately 90 kilometers from Srinagar—targeted a group of domestic tourists, according to local officials. The assailants reportedly opened fire on a bus carrying visitors, causing multiple casualties and injuries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act” and vowing that those responsible would be “brought to justice.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, currently on a four-day visit to India with his wife Usha and their children, also offered condolences. “Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India,” he said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack.”
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the magnitude of the attack was “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” adding that the final death toll is still being confirmed.
“This attack on our visitors is an abomination,” Abdullah said in a statement. “The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman, and worthy of contempt.”
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility. Security forces have launched a large-scale search operation in the region, which has witnessed periodic violence in recent decades.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the region and poses a fresh challenge to New Delhi’s efforts to promote tourism and economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
