Ranchi, July 27: Ranchi made its debut as a host city for the 135th Durand Cup on Monday, welcoming one of the world’s oldest football tournaments with a grand opening ceremony at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium.The inaugural event brought together senior military officers, state government representatives and sports officials, highlighting the significance of Jharkhand’s growing role in Indian football.
The ceremony combined military traditions with cultural performances, offering spectators a glimpse of the state’s rich heritage alongside the tournament’s historic legacy.The celebrations began with a ceremonial flypast and a performance by an Army band, followed by traditional dance presentations from Jharkhand.

A martial arts display and a lively cultural performance representing different parts of the country added to the festive atmosphere.A ceremonial parade featuring the tournament’s trophies formed one of the key attractions of the evening. Organisers also presented an audio-visual tribute tracing the history of the Durand Cup and its contribution to the development of football in India over more than a century.
The programme concluded with a march by flag bearers carrying tournament and fair play flags, followed by the introduction of participating teams and match officials. Dignitaries greeted the players before the ceremonial kick-off marked the official start of the Ranchi leg of the competition.Senior defence officials and Jharkhand government representatives attended the event, underlining the collaboration between the Indian Armed Forces, which organise the tournament, and the state government in hosting the competition.
Ranchi’s inclusion as a venue follows the successful hosting of matches in Jamshedpur during the previous edition, further strengthening Jharkhand’s position as an emerging destination for major football events in the country.
Founded in 1888, the Durand Cup is recognised as Asia’s oldest football tournament and one of the oldest surviving football competitions in the world. The 135th edition is being staged across multiple cities, featuring 24 teams competing in 43 matches.
