Ranchi, July 2: Panic spread in Jharkhand’s Jamshola area near Baharagora on Tuesday after a tanker carrying propylene gas developed a leak along National Highway-33, prompting an emergency response and evacuation measures, officials said.

The incident occurred near a petrol pump on the Baharagora-Baripada main road when locals observed gas escaping from the tanker, operated by Jai Ambika Oil Carrier. The vehicle, carrying the flammable gas from Mathura to Paradip for Indian Oil Corporation, was immediately halted by the driver to prevent further risk.

Authorities quickly responded by sealing off a 500-meter stretch on either side of the highway and suspending traffic. Section 144 (BNS-163) was imposed in the area, restricting public movement and gatherings.

“The situation is under control, and technical teams are on-site to manage the leak,” said Karan Satyarthi, Deputy Commissioner of Jamshedpur. “We urge the public to remain calm and cooperate with emergency personnel.”

The Baharagora Block Development Officer issued an advisory warning residents to avoid using flammable materials and to stay away from the vicinity of the tanker. The site remains cordoned off as experts work to contain the leak.

Propylene (C₃H₆) is a colorless, highly flammable hydrocarbon gas widely used in petrochemical and industrial manufacturing. Accidental leaks can lead to serious fire and explosion risks, as well as health and environmental hazards. No injuries or casualties have been reported so far.
