Dhanbad, October 10: In a major move to boost India’s global position in minerals and technology, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that a satellite campus of the UK–India Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory will be set up at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
The announcement came during a joint press statement after Modi’s meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai on Thursday. The meeting was held on the occasion of the first UK–India Critical Minerals Roundtable and Industry Guild.
The new initiative aims to build a secure, sustainable and strong supply chain of critical minerals between India and the United Kingdom. These minerals play a key role in developing clean energy, green technology, and modern industries.

During his address, Prime Minister Modi said that the launch of the second phase of the UK–India Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory will go hand in hand with the creation of an industry consortium to promote research, innovation, and collaboration in this field.
He added that the satellite campus at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad will highlight the institute’s long-standing academic heritage and modern research expertise in mining and geology.
The decision, he said, will strengthen India’s capability in exploration, processing, and supply chain management of critical minerals while deepening cooperation with international partners.
The new campus will serve as a centre for policy development, advanced research, and technological innovation, supporting India’s clean energy transition and sustainable growth efforts.
