New Delhi, Aug 12 : US President Donald Trump’s close aide and trade adviser Peter Navarro has recalled facing strong online criticism in India after writing an opinion article on New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
Navarro had alleged in the article that India’s increased imports of Russian oil after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine contributed indirectly to Russia’s war efforts. He also claimed that India was involved in refining and selling petroleum products linked to Russian supplies.
India strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as “inaccurate and misleading” and maintaining that its energy purchases are driven by national interests, affordability and energy security.
In a recent interview with ANI, Navarro said the issue had now been resolved, while recalling the intense reaction his article received online. He also urged people not to resort to such online backlash.
Navarro further highlighted the relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the two leaders have a “very good working relationship” and can address differences between the two countries through direct engagement.
His remarks come amid continuing discussions between India and the United States over Russian oil imports, tariffs and bilateral trade. Despite disagreements on these issues, both sides have continued diplomatic engagement on broader economic and strategic matters.
