NEW DELHI, Aug. 6 : Parliament on Thursday cleared key financial and taxation legislation even as proceedings witnessed Opposition demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police action against protesters during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar last month.
The Lok Sabha passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without debate. The Bill seeks to amend the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, the Income-tax Act, 2025, and the Finance Act, 2026.
The Rajya Sabha also approved and returned the Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026 to the Lok Sabha after passing it. The legislation authorises the payment and appropriation of certain additional sums from the Consolidated Fund of India for services during the financial year 2025-26.
Replying to the discussion on the Appropriation Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended the government’s financial proposals before the Upper House passed the measure.
Meanwhile, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in the House on the alleged police action against protesters during the July 20 demonstration at Jantar Mantar, saying the Opposition was prepared for a discussion on the issue.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan asked Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to convey the Opposition’s demand to the Home Minister.
The developments came amid continued efforts by the government and Opposition to break the parliamentary impasse during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
