AIZAWL, Mar 28: Mizoram recorded 1,845 live births and 720 deaths in January 2026, according to data released by the state’s Economics and Statistics Department, reflecting a positive population growth trend for the month.
The data showed a slightly favourable gender ratio at birth, with 949 female births compared to 896 male births.
Among districts, Aizawl district reported the highest number of births at 732, followed by Lunglei district with 292 and Lawngtlai district with 170.
Urban areas accounted for the majority of demographic activity, registering 1,127 births and 479 deaths, while rural areas recorded 718 births and 241 deaths.
A total of 720 deaths were reported during the month, including 456 males and 264 females. The data also recorded five stillbirths, along with 15 infant deaths (below one year) and five child deaths in the 1–5 years age group.
The figures are consistent with trends observed in 2025, when the state recorded 21,873 births with a near-balanced gender ratio. However, mortality data last year showed a marked disparity, with 5,183 male deaths compared to 2,897 female deaths—an excess of 2,286 male fatalities. The trend of higher male mortality has continued into January 2026.
Officials said the data highlights ongoing demographic patterns in the state, including higher urban concentration and gender variations in both birth and death rates.
