New Delhi, Mar 27: The Lok Sabha passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, on Thursday, with Home Minister Amit Shah stressing its significance for national security and economic growth.
Various amendments moved by opposition members were rejected, and the bill was passed by a voice vote.
Shah stated that India welcomes foreign visitors for business, education, and investment but emphasized that those posing security threats will face stringent action.
He said the bill is necessary to strengthen the country’s security, boost the economy, promote manufacturing and trade, and enhance the global reputation of India’s education system.
Replying to a debate on the bill, Shah said the legislation will ensure the country has up-to-date information on all foreigners visiting India.
“This is very important. The main issue is that immigration is not an isolated subject but is directly or indirectly linked to various issues. The bill will ensure close monitoring of everyone who visits India, why they visit, and how long they intend to stay. It is absolutely necessary to know the details of every foreigner visiting India,” he said after the three-hour-long debate.
The bill is expected to provide a more structured approach to immigration management and foreign visitor tracking, the government said.
