New Delhi, July 27: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Sunday reviewed the status of waste management in the national capital during a high-level meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner and senior officials. He directed the civic body to ensure that fresh municipal waste is processed scientifically on a concurrent basis so that it does not add to the existing burden at landfill sites.
During the meeting, the LG expressed concern that nearly half of Delhi’s municipal solid waste is still not being segregated at source. Officials informed the meeting that around 50 per cent of the waste generated in the city every day continues to be disposed of at landfill sites, underscoring the need for strengthening waste segregation, collection and processing systems.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasised that while significant progress has been made in the remediation of legacy waste at Delhi’s landfill sites, those efforts would lose their impact if newly generated waste continued to accumulate unchecked. He directed officials to adopt an integrated approach that focuses on both clearing old waste and ensuring efficient scientific treatment of fresh garbage.

The review also covered the progress of ongoing projects aimed at expanding the city’s waste-processing infrastructure. The MCD informed the LG that it is setting up five new waste processing plants across Delhi with a combined capacity to process approximately 5,900 metric tonnes (MT) of municipal waste every day.
Officials said the proposed facilities are expected to reduce the volume of waste reaching landfill sites, improve scientific disposal of municipal solid waste and support the city’s long-term goal of sustainable waste management. The projects are also expected to strengthen source segregation and enhance the efficiency of waste collection and processing across Delhi.
The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to closely monitor the implementation of the projects and ensure their timely completion, while stressing the need to improve waste segregation at source, enhance public participation and minimise dependence on landfill sites.
