Jamshedpur, Nov 29: Following a joint operation by the RPF flying squad of Chakradharpur division and the Government Railway Police (GRP), a massive ganja trafficking attempt has been busted at Tatanagar railway station.

The team, led by the Railway Police Deputy Superintendent, arrested one trafficker and seized 17 kg of ganja worth nearly Rs 8.5 lakh late on Friday night. The arrested accused has been identified as Uday Kumar, also known as Mantu, a resident of Hariharganj in Palamu district.

According to the police investigation, he had brought the consignment from Jarapada station under the Sambalpur division of Odisha. He planned to travel from Tatanagar to Daltonganj by bus to supply the ganja further.

Tatanagar GRP station in-charge Aruna Mishra said the team had prior intelligence about the suspect’s movements. On Friday night, as soon as he got off the train and started moving towards the ticket counter, the joint team surrounded him and detained him. During the search, 17 kg of illegal ganja was found inside his bag.

During interrogation, the accused admitted that he had been involved in the illegal trade for a long time. Police have begun examining his mobile call records and contacts to identify others linked to the trafficking network.

Mishra said surveillance at the station is being strengthened to curb rising smuggling activities.
