Garhwa, Aug 26: A 19-year-old woman suffered critical injuries after being struck by a passenger train while reportedly recording a social media video near a railway track in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district, officials said.The incident took place near Raisa in the Nagar-Untari railway section when the woman, identified as Purnima Kumari, was allegedly making a Reel with a group of friends.
According to preliminary information, Purnima was near the railway line when the Ranchi-Chopan Express approached from the Ranchi side. She reportedly failed to accurately assess the train’s speed and distance and was hit by the moving train.She suffered severe injuries in the accident, including the loss of both hands, besides injuries to other parts of her body.
Her friends immediately took her to Garhwa Sadar Hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment. Considering the seriousness of her condition, doctors subsequently referred her to a higher medical centre for specialised treatment.Purnima, daughter of Dheeraj Singh, is a resident of the Ashok Vihar area under Garhwa police station limits.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the risks people take while recording videos at hazardous locations for social media.Railway authorities and officials have repeatedly cautioned people against entering or standing close to railway tracks, as approaching trains can pose an immediate and potentially fatal danger.
The accident is also a reminder that the pursuit of online attention should never come at the cost of personal safety.
