Dharamshala, April 25 : A demand by Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu for the resignation of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu following the Pahalgam terror attack has ignited widespread backlash, primarily due to a significant geographical error made by the minister. The attack, which occurred in the Baisaran area of Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 individuals, most of whom were tourists.
In a statement made in Lohardaga, Sonu condemned the tragic incident and called for the resignation of Himachal Chief Minister Sukhu, stating that he “failed to protect citizens.” However, Sonu’s assertion that the attack occurred in Himachal Pradesh, rather than Kashmir, was quickly criticized for its apparent lack of awareness about the geography of the region.
Social media erupted with memes and mocking responses to Sonu’s statement, with many questioning how such a prominent political figure could be unaware of the attack’s location. Users flooded the platforms with humorous reactions, with some suggesting that even Google Maps might reconsider its location after Sonu’s remarks.
Political analysts were quick to label Sonu’s comment as a “geography fail of epic proportions,” and the incident has raised questions about the minister’s preparedness to hold a key portfolio in the state government, including his role overseeing tourism.
Sonu, a senior leader from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which is part of the Congress-led coalition government in the state, has yet to clarify his comment. His remarks have drawn criticism across party lines, with many emphasizing the importance of factual accuracy, especially when discussing such sensitive national issues.
Despite the backlash, Sonu’s comment drew attention to the seriousness of the Pahalgam attack, which has been widely condemned across the country. However, the uproar over his geographical blunder has overshadowed the gravity of the incident.
“His conduct and this statement are highly shameful,” said political observers, pointing out that Sonu’s failure to accurately identify the location of such a high-profile attack speaks volumes about the state of public leadership in Jharkhand.
This gaffe has since become a topic of intense discussion in political circles and social media platforms, with many urging politicians to focus on facts and avoid sensational remarks that could mislead the public.
“This is an extremely unfortunate incident. Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu must take responsibility and resign. He has failed to protect citizens.” — Sudivya Kumar Sonu.
