New Delhi, June 12: India’s active Covid-19 cases climbed to 7,121 on Wednesday, with six new deaths reported in the past 24 hours as several states, including Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, reported surges driven by emerging virus subvariants.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 8,573 people have been discharged nationwide, while the cumulative death toll since January 2025 has risen to 74.
Kerala recorded the highest increase in daily infections, with 170 new active cases, pushing the state’s total to 2,223. Gujarat and Karnataka followed with 114 and 100 new cases, respectively. Delhi reported 66 new infections, bringing the capital’s active caseload to 757. The city also recorded 90 recoveries during the same period.
Health authorities attributed the latest surge to multiple subvariants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, which are believed to be driving transmission in urban clusters.
The six fatalities reported since Tuesday include one in Maharashtra, two in Karnataka, and three in Kerala. The Maharashtra case involved a 43-year-old male who presented with breathlessness, abdominal pain, tachycardia, and cyanosis. His immune system was reportedly compromised.
Among the Kerala deaths were a 51-year-old woman with hypertension and a 79-year-old man with multiple underlying conditions including dyslipidemia, seizure disorder, and cervical myelopathy. The third death was of an 87-year-old woman, while Karnataka’s two fatalities were not immediately detailed by officials.
The Health Ministry has urged citizens to remain cautious, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions, and to follow existing Covid-19 safety protocols. Officials are monitoring the evolving situation and genomic data linked to the emerging variants.
This is a developing story. Further updates are expected.
