Dhanbad, March 7: BJP leader Sita Soren has accused her assistant, Devashish Manoranjan Ghosh, of attempting to shoot her in a hotel in the Saraidhela area of Dhanbad late Thursday night, according to police reports.
The alleged incident followed an altercation between Soren and Ghosh, during which he reportedly pointed a handgun at her. “Her bodyguard pounced on Ghosh and saved Sita Soren. After getting the information, the police reached the hotel. Ghosh was taken into custody and a country-made pistol was also recovered,” said Naushad Alam, Dhanbad DSP (law & order).
Ghosh, who had driven Sita Soren’s car to the hotel earlier in the evening, was arrested and is currently in police custody. A country-made handgun was recovered from him, police confirmed. The BJP leader’s bodyguard intervened in time to prevent the alleged shooting.
The incident led to a formal complaint being lodged by Sita Soren, the daughter-in-law of JMM supremo Shibu Soren, at the Saraidhela police station. “The security lapse angle was also being probed by the police,” Alam said.
Sita Soren, the sister-in-law of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, had traveled to Dhanbad on Thursday evening to attend a wedding ceremony before retiring to the hotel for the night.
The BJP leader, a former three-term JMM MLA, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2024, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. She later contested the Jamtara assembly seat in November 2024 but was defeated by the JMM candidate.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are looking into possible lapses in security during Sita Soren’s visit to the region.
