Muzaffarpur, Jan 3: Police in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district on Friday arrested a man for allegedly creating and circulating AI-generated fake videos and audio clips impersonating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, officials said.

The accused has been identified as Pramod Kumar Raj, a resident of Bhagwanpur village under the Bochaha police station area. According to investigators, Raj edited and shared fabricated digital content on social media platforms by misusing the names, images and voices of the President and the Prime Minister.

Police said the content was designed to mislead viewers and damage public trust in the country’s highest constitutional offices.

“The objective behind the AI-generated material was to undermine the dignity and prestige associated with these offices, create distrust in democratic institutions and disturb social harmony and law and order,” a police statement said.

The case came to light after the district police took note of suspicious content circulating online. A special team was formed to trace the source of the material, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused.

The mobile phone allegedly used to create and disseminate the fake videos and audio clips has been seized for forensic examination.

Officials warned that such fabricated content, if left unchecked, could fuel rumours, spread anti-national sentiment and trigger social unrest.

“Misuse of artificial intelligence for impersonation poses a serious threat to public order and democratic values,” a senior police officer said.

A case has been registered against Raj under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway.

Police said they are also verifying whether the accused has any prior criminal record and if others were involved in creating or amplifying the fake content.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns nationwide over the misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to spread misinformation and impersonate public figures, prompting law enforcement agencies to step up monitoring of digital platforms.
