Patna, Sep 22: The main accused in the alleged molestation and assault of a Class 10 student in Bihar’s Jamui district was shot in the leg during a police encounter while being taken to the reported scene of the incident, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Nandan Yadav, allegedly tried to flee when police were attempting to apprehend him near Madwa Hill, where two Class 10 students were allegedly stopped on September 19, officials said.
An encounter followed, during which Yadav sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was subsequently taken to Jamui Sadar Hospital for treatment.
ADG (Law and Order) K Suhita Anupam said Yadav attempted to escape while police were trying to apprehend him.
“Nandan Yadav had tried to escape while police were attempting to apprehend him, following which an encounter took place and he was shot in the leg,” she said.
Police said Yadav was identified as the young man allegedly wearing a red scarf in a video of the incident that went viral on social media.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case. Police said three of those arrested are aged between 35 and 40, while the other three are minors.
Police had earlier arrested Ramashish Chaudhary for allegedly making the video of the incident viral on social media. Investigators identified him after the video surfaced online.
According to police, the incident took place at around 7 pm on September 19, when the two students were returning after attending tuition. They had gone to Madwa Hill and were allegedly stopped by a group of young men while returning.
The students were allegedly subjected to harassment and assault for around an hour and made repeated attempts to escape, police said.
In the viral video, one of the accused was allegedly seen forcibly assaulting one of the students. Police said Yadav allegedly chased the girl, grabbed her from behind and later lifted her onto his lap.
The girl’s friend intervened and attempted to free her, leading to a scuffle with the accused. The student eventually managed to free her friend, but the accused allegedly continued to harass the two girls and tried to prevent them from leaving, police said.
Police said all the accused identified so far have been arrested and that further investigation is underway.
