Guwahati, Nov 17: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral roll, setting January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date for new voters. The revision, described as an urgent exercise by the Commission, will focus on updating records, correcting discrepancies and ensuring a clean and accurate voter list ahead of future elections.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision and assured full cooperation from the state government. In a post on X, he wrote: “The Govt of Assam welcomes the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Revision of the electoral roll with 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date. This will help ensure clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens. Assam will extend full cooperation to the @ECISVEEP to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner.”
According to the ECI’s communication to the state, district authorities have been instructed to treat the revision as a priority task. The Commission has emphasised transparency, strict timelines and rigorous field-level checks, particularly in districts that have previously reported inconsistencies or significant demographic changes.
Key Components of the Special Revision
- Door-to-door verification in sensitive and border districts
- Removal of duplicate or erroneous entries across electoral rolls
- Inclusion of new voters turning 18 on or before January 1, 2026
- Corrections and updates of addresses and personal details
- Strengthened documentation checks to ensure accuracy
District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) have been directed to mobilise field workers immediately. Following the Chief Minister’s instructions, the state government is preparing to deploy additional manpower to support the comprehensive verification drive.
The revision is expected to significantly improve the credibility and accuracy of Assam’s electoral roll, ensuring that eligible citizens are properly represented in the democratic process.
