Sivasagar (Assam), Aug 15: Flood survivors in Nepali Khuti village of Assam’s Sivasagar district came together to celebrate the 80th Independence Day, hoisting the Tricolour amid the mud, damaged homes and remains of settlements left behind by recent floods.
The village was severely affected by flooding, which damaged houses and disrupted the lives of residents while also affecting livestock. Thick layers of mud covered parts of the settlement, forcing many villagers to move to relief camps and temporary shelters.
Despite the devastation, residents returned to the flood-hit area on Friday and cleared a patch of land to organise the Independence Day ceremony.
Villagers, many of them seen wearing relief clothing, worked together to prepare the site before the national flag was hoisted against the backdrop of damaged bamboo structures and muddy ground.
The Tricolour was raised amid the remains of the flood-affected settlement as villagers from relief camps and makeshift shelters gathered to participate in the national-day observance.
The gathering reflected the resilience and unity of the flood-hit community, with residents determined to mark Independence Day despite displacement and the loss of homes and belongings.
The celebration came as several flood-affected communities across Assam continued to grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
Visuals from Nepali Khuti showed residents standing together at the affected site as the Tricolour flew over the flood-ravaged settlement, underscoring their resolve to rebuild their lives amid difficult circumstances.
The Independence Day observance thus became not just a national celebration but also a reflection of the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.
