New Delhi, September 3: The Yamuna river crossed the danger level in the Indian capital on Tuesday, flooding homes and streets in low-lying neighbourhoods and forcing authorities to begin evacuations, officials said.
The Central Water Commission said the river reached 205.80 metres at the Old Railway Bridge at 8 a.m. (0230 GMT), above the danger level of 205.33 metres. Water continued to rise following overnight rain and heavy discharge from upstream barrages.
The Yamuna received 1.76 lakh cusecs of water from Hathni Kund Barrage, 69,210 cusecs from Wazirabad Barrage, and 73,619 cusecs from Okhla Barrage, according to CWC data.
Floodwaters entered homes in parts of east Delhi, including Mayur Vihar and nearby areas, while residents reported waterlogging across the Trans-Yamuna region.
“We are constantly urging residents to vacate areas at risk of flooding. All district magistrates have been directed to remain prepared for any flood-like situation,” a city official told reporters. Authorities used boats and loudspeakers to ask people living along the riverbanks to evacuate as water levels threatened to rise further.
