Ranchi, August 23: At least five people were killed, one person went missing and several others were injured as heavy rains battered Jharkhand over the past 24 hours, officials said on Saturday.
In Seraikela-Kharsawan district, a woman and her seven-year-old son died after their house collapsed in Dandu village under Rajnagar block on Friday night. The house belonged to Santosh Lohar. Eight other visitors to the family were also injured. The mother and child died during treatment at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur.
In another incident in the same district, a five-year-old child was killed and three others injured after a house wall collapsed in Kol Shimla village under Kharsawan police station around 4 am on Saturday.
In Chatra district, a couple was swept away in the Siyari river at Katghara village on Friday. While the husband’s body was recovered, the wife is still missing. Another person also died in a rain-related incident in Khairatola village under Pathalgada block of the same district.
Continuous downpour in Jharkhand has uprooted trees and electricity poles, damaged houses, and inundated roads and farmlands across several districts.
The Subernarekha river has crossed the danger mark at Mango bridge in Jamshedpur, while the Kharkai river was flowing above the red mark at Adityapur bridge.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for most parts of the state till August 25.
