Powerful quake strikes Russia’s Far East, tsunami warnings downgraded in Pacific

July 30: One of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history struck Russia’s Far East early on Wednesday, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific region and prompting evacuations along coastal areas from Japan to Hawaii. The magnitude 8.8 quake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 21 km, according to geological authorities.

Tsunami warnings were initially issued for Alaska, Hawaii, and other regions extending south toward New Zealand. However, the threat appeared to be easing by late afternoon.

Russian authorities cancelled tsunami alerts for Kamchatka, Sakhalin Island, and the town of Severo-Kurilsk in the northern Kuril Islands after monitoring conditions for several hours. Hawaii and parts of Japan also downgraded their tsunami warnings to advisories. Japan’s Meteorological Agency lowered the alert level for the Pacific coast south of Fukushima, though warnings remained in place for northern areas.

There were no immediate reports of major damage, though several people were injured. Officials said the injuries were not life-threatening and advised residents to stay away from shorelines as aftershocks and residual wave activity may persist. “This was one of the most powerful seismic events we have seen in decades,” said a seismologist at the US Geological Survey, adding that the magnitude and location made the event significant globally.

The USGS confirmed that the quake is among the strongest in history, based on seismic data compiled through June 2025. Authorities across the Pacific Rim are continuing to monitor the situation as the region braces for potential aftershocks and coastal disturbances over the next 24 hours.
