Ranchi, May 9: A 56-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Jharkhand’s capital, Ranchi, a day after her son reportedly assaulted her, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased, Sunita Devi, was found hanging at her residence in Makchand Toli under Chutia police station limits. An FIR has been lodged against her son, Rahul Kesari, on charges of abetment to suicide, based on a complaint filed by her daughter, Ruby Kesari.

According to the police report, the incident followed an altercation on May 5, during which Rahul allegedly beat his mother with a belt and fists, before leaving the house. The woman was alone at the time.

Neighbours alerted the family the following morning after noticing the house had not been opened since the previous day. Ruby, who lives in Bharkunda with her in-laws, rushed to Ranchi. Upon arrival, she found the door locked from inside and later discovered her mother hanging.

“My brother beat my mother with a belt and punches. After hitting her, he left the house, and she was alone,” Ruby told police in her statement. “When I opened the door, I saw my mother hanging from a noose. Rahul often used to beat and torture our mother.”

Police are investigating the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and have not yet made any arrests.
