Tel Aviv, Dec 31: Nvidia Corp., one of the world’s most valuable companies, has completed the acquisition of Israeli startup Run:ai, bolstering its position in artificial intelligence (AI) by adding advanced software designed to optimize AI computing hardware.
The software, which currently functions exclusively on Nvidia systems, will be made open-source, enabling adaptation for hardware produced by Nvidia’s competitors. “Open sourcing the software will enable it to extend its availability to the entire AI ecosystem,” Run:ai said in a statement.
Nvidia declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal, but Israeli newspaper Calcalist previously reported its value at $700 million (roughly Rs. 5,990 crore). This acquisition follows Nvidia’s 2020 purchase of Mellanox Technologies Ltd. for $7 billion (roughly Rs. 59,904 crore), its most significant deal in Israel to date.
Run:ai has collaborated closely with Nvidia since 2020, and its founders, Omri Geller and Ronen Dar, have focused on developing software to enhance AI hardware efficiency. “We are eager to build on the achievements we’ve obtained until now, expand our talented team, and grow our product and market reach,” the company added.
Nvidia’s acquisition underscores its leadership in the AI hardware space, where its accelerator chips dominate data centers powering AI services. The company generates tens of billions of dollars per quarter, far outpacing competitors in the burgeoning AI market.
By open-sourcing Run:ai’s software, Nvidia aims to expand its influence across the broader AI ecosystem while promoting collaboration in the industry.
The deal highlights Nvidia’s commitment to staying at the forefront of AI technology while addressing growing competition. The open-source initiative could foster innovation and attract broader adoption of Nvidia’s solutions, cementing its leadership in the field.
