New Delhi, Sep 23: The Southwest Monsoon withdrew from Delhi on Wednesday, two days earlier than its normal withdrawal date, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).The weather department said the monsoon also retreated from most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, besides covering the entire national capital, along with some areas of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
The normal withdrawal date for the Southwest Monsoon from Delhi is September 25, based on IMD data for the 1971-2019 period. In 2025, the monsoon had withdrawn from the national capital on September 24.The monsoon arrived over Delhi on July 2 this year, later than its usual onset date of June 27.
Despite the delayed onset and slightly early withdrawal, Delhi received more rainfall than its long-term average during the period. The Safdarjung weather station recorded 728.6 mm of rain between June 1 and September 23, compared with the normal 629.7 mm.
The rainfall was around 16 per cent above the long-term average, although the IMD placed it within the overall “normal rainfall” category under its classification system.
The withdrawal date has varied considerably over the years. According to the IMD, the earliest withdrawal from Delhi since 1961 was recorded in 1982, when the monsoon retreated on September 3.
The latest withdrawal occurred in 2013, when it took place on October 17.The withdrawal of the monsoon marks a gradual transition towards the post-monsoon weather pattern in the national capital.
However, the end of the monsoon season does not rule out rainfall, as Delhi can continue to receive showers due to other local and regional weather systems.
