Ranchi, Sep 23: Jharkhand’s government school system is facing a shortage of teachers, with a large number of teaching positions reportedly remaining vacant across primary and middle schools in the state.
According to figures cited in recent reports, nearly 50,000 teaching posts are vacant, while around 7,500 government schools are functioning with only one teacher.The shortage has raised concerns about the workload on teachers and the availability of regular classroom instruction, particularly in schools where a single teacher is required to manage students from different classes.
The state has already undertaken recruitment for 26,000 Assistant Teacher, or Sahayak Acharya, posts. However, the number of candidates qualifying in the recruitment process was significantly lower than the number of posts advertised.
As per the reported figures, around 11,300 candidates qualified, including 7,301 trained teacher candidates and 3,999 candidates from the non-Para category.Officials and recruitment-related reports have pointed to several factors behind unfilled positions, including delays in recruitment, a shortage of eligible candidates and administrative or legal issues associated with the selection process.
The teacher shortage can increase the workload of existing staff, particularly in rural and remote areas. Teachers in single-teacher schools may have to handle multiple classes and subjects, along with other school-related responsibilities.
The state is expected to undertake further recruitment to address the vacancies. Possible recruitment drives could cover positions such as primary teachers, trained graduate teachers, postgraduate teachers and assistant teachers.
However, the exact number of posts, eligibility requirements, examination schedule and selection procedure will depend on official recruitment notifications issued by the competent authorities.
For aspiring teachers, the reported vacancies have increased expectations of fresh recruitment opportunities. Candidates preparing for examinations such as JTET and CTET are advised to follow official notifications for confirmed details.
The issue highlights the need not only to fill vacant teaching posts but also to ensure adequate deployment of teachers across schools so that students receive regular classroom instruction.
