New Delhi, Sep 21: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will organise an investor meeting in Bengaluru to attract investments and strengthen industry participation in the proposed Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, the Communications Ministry said on Monday.
The meeting will be led by Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, in association with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
The Bengaluru event is aimed at bringing together telecom manufacturers, technology companies, electronics and component producers, investors, infrastructure providers and other stakeholders to explore opportunities in the proposed manufacturing zone.
According to the ministry, discussions will focus on expanding domestic manufacturing, encouraging research and innovation, strengthening supply chains and creating employment opportunities. The government has announced an incentive package for investments under the TMZ initiative.
The package has been designed based on inputs received from the industry, the ministry said. The Bengaluru meeting follows investor interactions held earlier in New Delhi and Mumbai.
Those meetings resulted in investment commitments worth around Rs 5,500 crore, which are expected to generate nearly 18,000 employment opportunities, according to the ministry.
The government expects the Bengaluru event to build on this investment momentum by connecting the Gwalior project with Karnataka’s strong technology, electronics, telecommunications and innovation ecosystem.
The proposed Gwalior TMZ is being developed as an integrated 170-acre plug-and-play industrial cluster focused on telecom manufacturing, research and development and innovation.
The zone is expected to support manufacturing activities involving mobile devices, optical fibre, telecom equipment and next-generation 5G and 6G technologies.
Under recently signed memoranda of understanding, the Centre will provide 100 per cent funding support of Rs 493 crore for Phase-I of the project, while the Madhya Pradesh government has made around 170 acres of land available free of cost and will provide various incentives to investors.
A special purpose vehicle has also been established to implement the project. The Madhya Pradesh government holds 51 per cent equity in the SPV, while the Department of Telecommunications holds the remaining 49 per cent.
The government sees the TMZ initiative as part of its broader effort to strengthen India’s domestic telecom value chain, reduce dependence on imports, promote indigenous design and manufacturing, expand exports and position the country as a global hub for telecom products and emerging technologies.
The ministry said the Bengaluru investor meeting is expected to provide industry leaders and investors an opportunity to explore partnerships in manufacturing, R&D, technology development, supply-chain integration and job creation.
The initiative is also intended to support the government’s broader vision of developing India from a major telecom services market into a global centre for telecom product manufacturing and technological innovation.
