New Delhi, Sep 17: The monsoon remained active across several parts of India on Thursday, with rain alerts issued for six states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, as flooding, landslides, hail and lightning-related incidents were reported from multiple regions.

The flood situation in Bihar remained critical, with around 50 lakh people across 15 districts affected. A yellow rain alert has been issued for 26 districts amid the continuing rainfall.

More than 700 rural roads across Bihar were submerged, including over 100 that were completely washed away. Around 400 roads suffered more than 50 per cent damage, while another 200 roads were also affected, disrupting connectivity in several areas.

In neighbouring Jharkhand, three people, including a woman, died after being struck by lightning, highlighting the risks posed by thunderstorms during the active monsoon.

Rajasthan also witnessed contrasting weather conditions, with rainfall reported in seven districts on Wednesday and hailstorm reported in Sri Ganganagar. However, intense heat persisted in parts of the Bikaner division.

Pilani in Jhunjhunu recorded the state’s highest temperature at 40.2 degrees Celsius, while Bikaner registered 39.4 degrees Celsius.

In Uttarakhand, heavy rain lashed Dehradun, while a fresh landslide disrupted the Adi Kailash pilgrimage route in Pithoragarh. Debris and boulders fell onto the road around 12:10 pm on Wednesday, forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement along the route.

Several parts of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, also received rain on Thursday morning. The weather conditions caused visibility in Shimla to fall below 20 metres, affecting movement across the city.

The hill town also experienced unusually dark conditions around 7:15 am as heavy clouds and rain reduced visibility.

Authorities in the affected states continued to monitor weather conditions as the monsoon remained active and further rainfall was forecast in several regions.
