Bengaluru, Sept 17: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has inaugurated a new Electric Vehicle (EV) and Green Skills Lab at the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) in Bengaluru, aimed at strengthening practical training in electric mobility and emerging green technologies.
MSDE Secretary Debashree Mukherjee inaugurated the facility under the Skills4Future programme, a collaborative initiative involving Shell India, the Directorate General of Training (DGT), MSDE and EduNet Foundation.
The new laboratory has been designed to provide students and trainers with hands-on exposure to electric vehicle systems, battery technologies, diagnostics and safety practices. It will also support training in other emerging green technologies relevant to the growing sustainable mobility sector.
During her visit, Mukherjee interacted with students, trainers and industry representatives and reviewed the infrastructure and practical learning modules available at the facility.
She highlighted the importance of cooperation between industry and government in preparing workers for emerging employment opportunities. Programmes such as Skills4Future, she said, can help young people develop skills relevant to green mobility, renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
The Skills4Future programme has expanded its reach across five states, covering more than 290 institutions and providing training to over 70,000 learners. More than 258 faculty members have also received skill enhancement support, while 20 Green Skills EV Labs have been established under the initiative.
In Karnataka alone, the programme has covered 101 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and trained around 9,113 students, contributing to the development of a workforce equipped for the state’s emerging green economy.
The newly established laboratory at NSTI Bengaluru is expected to strengthen this ecosystem by combining advanced training infrastructure with practical learning opportunities.
The initiative seeks to bridge emerging skill gaps by integrating industry-oriented curricula, hands-on training and employment-related opportunities. It is intended to prepare young people for changing requirements in electric mobility and other sustainable sectors.
The inauguration marks another step in the collaboration between MSDE, DGT and Shell India to expand future-oriented skill development and support the creation of a workforce capable of contributing to India’s transition towards greener and more sustainable technologies.
