Ranchi, Aug 25: Tata Steel has received interim relief in connection with a ₹1,755-crore mining demand notice issued by the Jharkhand government over alleged excess coal extraction at its West Bokaro Colliery in Ramgarh, according to a regulatory filing by the company.
The demand notice, issued by the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, relates to alleged excess extraction of 16.24 million tonnes of coal beyond permissible limits during the period from 2000-01 to 2006-07.
Tata Steel had challenged the demand, maintaining that it lacked justification and substantive basis. In April, the company filed a Revision Application before the revisional authority of the Ministry of Coal against the demand notice.
After hearing the matter, the Revisional Authority admitted Tata Steel’s Revision Application for consideration and directed the respondents not to take any coercive steps against the company pursuant to the disputed demand notices or related letters while the revision proceedings remain pending.
The interim direction provides relief to Tata Steel as the underlying dispute over the mining demand continues before the revisional authority.
Meanwhile, Tata Steel has announced plans to invest around ₹11,000 crore in Jharkhand to develop advanced-grade steel at its Jamshedpur facility. Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran had earlier said that technology developed by the group for advanced steel production would also benefit other steelmakers.
The development comes as Tata Steel continues to expand and modernise its operations in Jharkhand, one of its key manufacturing bases.
