RANCHI, August 25 : Police have registered a case against 38 people for allegedly molesting and assaulting a member of the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch during a protest in Ranchi on August 21, officials said on Tuesday.
The case was registered on Monday at the Kotwali police station after the woman, accompanied by Jharkhand Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Babulal Marandi, submitted a complaint, police said.
Eight people have been named in the FIR, while 30 others have been booked as unidentified accused. The accused have been charged with molestation and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Sanoj Choudhary told PTI.
The alleged incident took place near Albert Ekka Chowk during a procession organised over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
The complainant alleged that the protesters were holding a peaceful procession and were attempting to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi when she was allegedly assaulted and molested.
Marandi condemned the alleged incident, describing it as an attack on students who were raising their concerns through democratic means.
He said the BJP stood firmly with the protesting students and would support their movement.
The case comes amid continuing protests in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and the government’s handling of the issue.
