Bhagalpur, Aug 24: A portion of the Kajikoraiya-Raghopur marginal embankment along the Ganga breached in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district early Monday, triggering panic among residents as water began flowing towards Naugachhia, officials said.
The breach occurred around 2:30 am near Ward 12, Tola Shankarpur, in Kharik Circle, following erosion caused by the rising Ganga water level and strong river currents.
“Water is flowing towards Naugachhia following the erosion,” the district administration said in a statement.
The Flood Control Department has deployed engineers and a technical team at the site, where protective work is being carried out on a war footing to control the water flow and prevent further erosion.

Necessary resources and materials have also been mobilised to strengthen the embankment and contain the flow of water.

District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey is monitoring the situation, while the Additional Collector (Disaster Management), Naugachhia Sub-Divisional Officer and officials and engineers of the Flood Control Department are camping at the affected site.
The erosion site is located around 500 metres from the native village of Bihar Energy Minister Bulo Mandal, according to officials.
The district administration has appealed to residents in nearby areas to remain calm and not pay heed to rumours, assuring them that all necessary measures are being taken to protect the embankment and ensure public safety.
The breach comes amid rising water levels in the Ganga, with authorities maintaining close watch on vulnerable stretches of embankments and riverine areas.
