RANCHI Aug 21: A scuffle broke out between police and student protesters in Ranchi after demonstrators attempted to burn an effigy of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, a day after the Jharkhand High Court stayed the state government’s decision to cancel appointments linked to the 11th and 13th JPSC examinations.
The protesters gathered in large numbers at Albert Chowk to demonstrate against the High Court order and attempted to set fire to effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Police intervened to prevent the effigy-burning, leading to a scuffle between the security personnel and protesters. Workers of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) were also present at the spot, according to an official.
“They gathered in large numbers at the prominent Albert Chowk to burn effigies of CM Soren and Rahul Gandhi. When the police tried to control them, a scuffle broke out. JMM workers were also present at the spot,” the official told news agency PTI.
The protest was held a day after the Jharkhand High Court put on hold the state government’s decision concerning the cancellation of public recruitment examinations and appointments following allegations of irregularities.
The court’s intervention has triggered renewed protests among aspirants, who have been demanding action over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.
The latest demonstration comes amid continuing tension over recruitment examinations in the state, with student groups and political parties taking opposing positions on the government’s decision and the subsequent court order.
